[ARCHIVED] “Bring the Candy Bomber Back to Miami”

Col. Halvorsen earned his wings here in Miami in the 1940’s while attending British Flying Training School #3. He was one of the 172 Americans that trained here. After the conclusion of World War II, he participated in the Berlin Airlift which was an effort to drop food items from planes into Berlin to feed the residents. When he noticed the children waiting by the airfield each day, he thought of the idea to drop candy into Berlin for the children by tying handkerchief parachutes onto the candy. It then became an international effort called “Operation Little Vittles”.

Our goal is to raise $1,000 for the travel expenses to bring Col. Halvorsen and his wife back to Miami. A form is attached is you would like to contribute or may know of an organization that would like to contribute to this fund. G.A.R. Cemetery Office Manager Nancy Bro can answer any questions you have. She can be reached at 918-541-2288 or nbro@miamiokla.net. If Mr. Halvorsen is unable to attend then all donated funds will be returned to the donor.
Enclosed is a link to a short video about Col. Gail Halvorson-“The Candy Bomber”.
