[ARCHIVED] Construction to begin soon on Rockdale Bridge

Rockdale Boulevard will close between the intersections of Brookside Drive and Elm Street. Additionally, barricades will be placed at the intersection of Elm and McKinley street, traffic flow on Elm Street will not be delayed.

“We will be detouring traffic traveling eastbound on Rockdale Boulevard to I Street N.E. and then onto Central Avenue and then to Elm Street,” Cline said. “Traffic traveling westbound will be diverted down Elm Street onto Central Avenue and then down I street N.E. to Rockdale Boulevard.”

Construction is expected to stretch into April, 2015, and will mark the first opportunity for the City of Miami and Ottawa County (District 3) to work together on a bridge construction project. The joint venture is made possible through a May, 2014, interlocal agreement approved by the Ottawa County Commission and the Miami City Council. The agreement capitalizes on 74 O.S. Section 1008 which permits local governmental units to make the most efficient use of their powers by enabling them to cooperate with other localities on the basis of mutual advantage.

Rockdale Bridge, built in 1918 and reconstructed in 1960, was determined to be structurally deficient in a 2013 inspection conducted by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. Construction costs are estimated to be $675,000.
